This year at the Bellavita Expo, the largest Made-In-Italy food and beverage trade show, held at London’s Business Design Centre from June 18-20, the live finals of the UK Sommelier Association’s The Bellavita Best UK Sommelier 2017, Villa Sandi Award organised by the UK Sommelier Association and Italian Sommelier Association was held, culminating in the announcement of the UK’s Best Sommelier: Valentin Radosav.

The Bellavita Best UK Sommelier 2017, Villa Sandi Award organised by UKSA and AIS pays homage to the style and elegance of this artistic and passion fuelled profession, and has been designed to celebrate the wine professionals within the hospitality industry.

This year’s winner, Radosav, is the Head Sommelier at Michelin-starred restaurant Gymkhana in London. Valentin says, “I am feeling incredibly pleased to have won this prestigious award. It has been a great experience to be a part of, and this year I was up against a particularly tough group of sommeliers. The tests which we were set were challenging and I am proud to have come out on top.”

Valentin was chosen from sommeliers and wine professionals from all over the country organised by UKSA and AIS, the Best Sommelier UK 2017, Villa Sandi Award, including runners up Salvatore Castano, Assistant Head Sommelier at Mash.

The live finals were held within the Wine Academy at the Bellavita Expo that took place on the first day of the Expo. After a round of heats judged by expert panels, the final stage of the competition saw the competitors put to the test with written, oral, and food and wine pairing challenges. This last step of the competition was judged by a panel of three experts who posed as guests of the Sommeliers. This year’s judging panel for the final stage of the competition included Master of Wine David Bird and Master of Wine Peter McCombie.

Flavio Geretto of Villa Sandi says, “Villa Sandi is proud to be part of the UK movement to support the sommeliers of the Italian Sommelier Association. This is our second year of hosting the awards and the competition was of a very high level. Congratulations to all the participants and of course to the winner, Valentin!”.

Federica Zanghirella from UKSA says, “The awards have been a very exciting experience for us all. Watching some of the UK's sommeliers do what they do in restaurants on stage, under so much pressure has been great to watch and it's clear to see how much passion they all have for their profession. Valentin was particularly exceptional and I'm glad to see that he won”.

Bellavita's CEO Aldo Mazzocco says, “We’ve been really excited about this award and it’s a showcase of some of the finest sommeliers from across Italy. Valentin has captured the essence of what it is to be a sommelier in a thriving, competitive industry by sharing his expert knowledge and skill.”
